Preliminary Exercise 13: Introduction to Sound in Film (Be a Sound Engineer)

Introduction

Sound in a movie includes music, dialogue, sound effects, ambient noise, and/or background noise and soundtracks. Some sort of sound is always used to enhance the movie experience. Sound in film is important because it really emerges us into a movie to help us feel like were in the movie, it helps the movie feel real to us by making us feel certain emotions and feelings when watching a movie. By submerging the audience into the movie, the director manages to create a connection between them and the audience.

Section A:  Definitions and Examples

Score: ______/20marks

Sound in film

Background noises, ambident noises, or sound effects in a movie. For example wind blowing in the air or a song playing during an action scene.

Soundtrack

The list of recorded music in a movie. After a movie’s release, a movie will typically release them in albums for example the Star Wars original soundtrack.

Theme music

The song most associated with a film, usually played in the beginning or is really standout. Once again, Star Wars comes to mind with it’s iconic theme song which plays as the just as iconic text scrolls.

Sound effects

Dialogue

2 or more people talking in a film, it tells how we’re supposed to feel about these characters. Like someone evil such as Voldemort talks down to people and is manipulative.

Atmospheric sounds in a film, they help build the world. Things such as cars passing by or wind blowing shape how a world is formed in a movie and without it the environments feel bland and lifeless.

 Reflection

In this exercise I managed to learn why sound is so important when making movies. To make this assignment we didn't really have to split the work, but we simply started by looking up the definitions than having each of us list possible answers and we chose the best one to base it off with. I would say that my teams and I did amazing on the assignment because we managed to finish it on time with no major problem.
